Weather symbols

How to read the icons in the forecasts on Været.org. The symbols follow the international WMO standard and the MET symbol set, and switch automatically between day and night variants according to sunrise/sunset.

Weather types

Clear sky (day)

Clear or almost cloudless during the day.

WMO 0–1

Clear sky (night)

Clear sky at night — the moon is shown instead of the sun.

WMO 0–1

Partly cloudy (day)

Variable cloud cover with sun at times.

WMO 2

Partly cloudy (night)

Variable cloud cover at night.

WMO 2

Cloudy / overcast

Continuous cloud cover with little or no sun.

WMO 3

Fog

Fog or mist that reduces visibility. Includes freezing fog (rime).

WMO 45–48

Rain

Rain, drizzle, sleet, showers and freezing rain — all precipitation in liquid form.

WMO 51–67, 80–82

Snow

Snow and snow showers — precipitation falling as snow.

WMO 71–77, 85–86

Thunder

Thunderstorms, often with heavy showers, lightning and hail.

WMO 95–99

Warnings — colour levels

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET) and NVE use three colours to show how serious a warning is. The same scale applies to wind, rain, snow, floods and landslides.

Yellow level

Be aware. Challenging weather that may cause local damage.

Orange level

Be prepared. Severe weather — significant damage, disruption and danger expected.

Red level

Be protected. Extreme weather with major consequences for life, health and property.

About the symbols

WMO standard and the MET symbol set

Været.org fetches forecasts from global weather models and from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway). Each time point gets a weather code (WMO) that is translated into one of the symbols above. During the day the sun is shown; at night the moon is shown for the same weather type. The precipitation symbols cover both continuous precipitation and showers. For official warnings, see Warnings.
